With the new football season nearly upon us if you’re intending to get out on the field yourself as well as/instead of watching, below are some details of football clubs in Hedge End.

There are opportunities for men, boys and girls to get involved.

Hedge End Rangers was founded in 1974 and has 10 mini soccer teams, 11 Southampton and District Tyro league teams, 4 youth, 3 girls, a men’s team and a ‘vets’’ team (which originally I thought was a team for animal doctors – sorry chaps – but I think now means a veterans’ team ).

They play at the Norman Rodaway Pavilion in Heath House Lane and also run a coaching centre in association with Saints in the Community at Wildern for Years R, 1 and 2 and for both boys and girls. The course runs from Saturday 14 August to Saturday 16 October. See their website for more information about the clubs and the coaching centre and for a coaching booking form.

Hedge End Methodist Football Club was formed by Steve Garley in 2009. They say the team is made up of players who attend church, who are Christian or who have no faith but respect those of others and they welcome people who can ‘run, kick roughly in the right direction’ and are looking for a club that enjoys the taking part and playing – although they profess to like the winning too – but generally people out to enjoy themselves on the football pitch.

They play in the Solent Football Churches League and you can find out more information about the club by visiting their website.

And on the subject of football, Sainsbury’s is selling children’s lunch boxes in the shape of football shirts. Unfortunately, we don’t have a Chelsea, Man U or Tottenham supporter in the house – but if you do, they would make a great present or as a school lunch box help to beat the back to school blues.
