A very big store. I think it was once the biggest in England. Despite this the staff (especially cashiers) are very pleasant – especially when dealing with complaints by customers after the store having run out of stock.

So this supermarket falls into the trap that every big store does of changing its items round so much that the customers cant find the aisle first time round but the produce is fresh, reasonably priced and you can find everything you need for your basic weekly shop. I have mostly found the staff friendly although occasionally it is infuriating that they dont seem to know much about the store and where the items are (understandable if they keep moving the stock about!) but generally polite and the cashiers very willing to talk on occasion!
I wanted a special menu for Mothers Day and chose all yes, Sainsburys ALL the recipes I was going to cook from the April edition of Sainsburys magazine on sale now in store.
One of the dishes was A gratin of spring greens and walnuts.
Unfortunately, Sainsburys didnt have spring greens.
At the Customer Services desk I was invited to speak to the duty manager. I asked why they didnt ensure a good stock of ingredients specified for recipes in their magazines as this is not the first time Ive been unable to source an ingredient for a dish from a current magazine.
The manager told me that they werent pre-informed of recipe ingredients. Tip, Sainsburys take down a magazine from the shelf, open it and list and order the ingredients your customers are likely to be shopping for. The duty manager said it was frustrating not to be informed ahead of time. Sainsburys take note not nearly as frustrating as having your menu worked out and having to change on the spot on a busy Saturday afternoon.
When I asked the manager for a recommendation for a substitute for spring greens he said he didnt cook and didnt know about food he was from hardware. But he works in Sainsburys for goodness sake!!!!!
Sainsburys, please note - fortunately I do cook and do know about food and bought a white cabbage instead and incidentally the dish turned out really well.
