As schools across Hampshire begin a new term and new school year this week, Hedge End can look back on a great year for education with Wildern School achieving its best GCSE exam results ever, recording 91 percent five A* to C grades – well up on the national figure of 69.1 percent.

Wildern School Head Marie-Louise Litton said, “These results are our best ever and a huge achievement. They reflect total commitment from a wonderful staff and motivated hard working youngsters. We are simply delighted that we have achieved yet again way above the national average.”

The government sets a target for pupils leaving secondary school of GCSEs at grade A* to C in five subjects which include maths and English. At Wildern 77 percent of students achieved this, while overall in the country last year the figure was 50 percent.

Hampshire County Council is also reporting a record high set of exam results for pupils across the county, with 76 percent being awarded A* – C grades in five GCSE subjects (or equivalent) and  three out of five students achieving A*- C in five  including maths and English, both figures representing a 4 percent increase over last year’s results.

As well as GCSEs pupils in Hampshire can study for qualifications which include BTEC diplomas and certificates, NVQs and Key Skills.

Councillor Ken Thornber, Hampshire County Council's Leader, said, "Congratulations to Hampshire pupils for their achievements and to our schools and teachers. These results reflect the hard work by both staff and pupils at schools across the county.

“I wish all our pupils the very best for their future endeavours."
