Seen Eastleigh Borough Council’s New Website?

Having had difficulties navigating round the old one I was pleasantly pleased to see the new layout when I went on the site today.

In his Budget Presentation of 22 February (which you can access via the website) Council Leader Cllr Keith House says the website is ‘similar in format to the BBC’s website with panels or flakes that can be moved around the screen’.

I can see the similarities in the way they are both laid out – but I still can’t find a definition for ‘flakes’ – apart from for chocolate, corn and bran flakes – so please someone enlighten me!

The site is in green and easy to look at and I like the format of the Home page – with a calendar with dates of events highlighted, the ‘What’s at my property’ facility clearly displayed, and a good main menu with subject headings The Council, Planning & Building Control, Council Tax and Benefits, Housing Waste, Recycling, Environment Parking, Travel & Roads, Leisure and Culture, Business and Our Community.

I also like the way contact details are displayed prominently on the Home page too – although it says you can customise the page, adding and taking away panes.

I haven’t  come across anything I don’t like yet, but I’ve only had a quick look.

Has anyone else visited the new site yet? If so, what do you think?

Agreed. Being able to say that the website has been redesigned is an easy way for Councillors to say that they have have done something, even if the end-product is worse than its predecessor....

Big corporate Britain, Central Government and the BBC are pulling that trick all the time...

I thought it had been revamped to accommodate the obligations of the recent Local Democracy Act in respect of providing an online facility for E-petitions. Couldn't find anything about petitions at all.
Rather disappointing as I wanted to start one.
Having movable flakes is not a statutory requirement of a local authority web site. Having a facility for E- petitions is. So I am not sure if this is money well spent.
I also notice the new (2008) corporate logo has reversed colours.
I do hope this does not mean there will be another re-branding exercise in replacing, stationary, street name plates etc.
