This election leaflet, entitled Save Greta Park, dropped through my letterbox this morning. I was very pleased to see the local Conservatives committing themselves to stopping the use of Greta Park for temporary car-parking during events staged at the Rose Bowl.

They are organising a petition, so if you care about Greta Park please complete and return the slip on the bottom of the flyer.

I think there's a lot of spin coming out of the Council Pete.

Keith is right when he says that they don't allow Car-Parking on Greta Park, its true, they don't at the moment. There's also a lot of hiding behind the words principle and proposal...

Our argument of course, which is fully supported by the evidence of the official minutes, is that they're clearing the way for car-parking to be permitted in future. The decision we refer to here is the proverbial thin-end of the wedge....

As I've indicated, I work with Paul Redding and see him every day. He also happens to be a near neighbour. We don't really share the same politics (I'm sure he would agree!) though there is clearly some overlap. I now know Paul well enough to trust him when he says he's committed to stopping car-parking on Greta Park and Turnpike way. Regular readers will know that I don't say things like that of Politicians very often...!

I don't live in the Wildern ward so won't be able to vote for Paul this time, but if I did, I would...!

I hope Hedge Enders living in Wildern ward will vote for Paul Redding (Tory) on 6th May and generally consider voting for somebody other than the LibDems at local level, as we need a tactical change in Hedge End. Local Lib Dems are just getting a bit too complacent in my view, and have pushed some bad ideas through...

I don't mind if you vote for Chris Huhne though. He's been quite a good MP actually (despite the Trouser press and Hob Nobs). I'm also sure Nick Clegg would be an excellent PM, on the basis of those TV debates: A Lib Dem Government is the sort of wholesale change that we need nationally...!

But at the end of the day, the important thing is to go out and vote.

    May the best person win.......

Clr House...so why does your own Town Council website state the following.......

.....Council narrowly agreed in principle that Greta Park and Turnpike Way recreation grounds can be used for Test Match parking provided acceptable terms and conditions can be agreed.

...and your OFFICIAL minutes state........It was Proposed by Cllr. Derek Pretty, Seconded by Cllr. Keith Day and agreed in principle that Greta Park and Turnpike Way can be
used for Rose Bowl Test Cricket subject to acceptable terms and conditions. 9 For 7 Against 0 Abstentions. Motion Carried.

Actually, Keith has been rather persuasive with his argument that I will repeat below.

"Councillors and councils have a duty to look rationally at any proposition put in front of them regardless of how ridiculous it may seem.  With any decisions regarding planning, licensing or leases if they are seen to have predetermined a decision by saying "of course" or "never" they can be excluded from taking part and voting in the debate."

I'll accept that as a fair point...

But the minutes of the Hedge End Town Council meeting of 17th Feb clearly accepts the principle of car-parking on Greta park. So the current debate here and around Hedge End in general is entirely justified.

Why on earth didn't the Lib Dems kick the idea into touch immediately. You could have just as easily voted to reject the principle of car-parking on Greta Park, which would have been perfectly valid within the duties/responsibilities you spoke about Keith, but collectively you didn't...!

    Why...?

    Now this is getting interesting...

The following is taken from a publicly available document.

    -----------------------------

HEDGE END TOWN COUNCIL MINUTES OF A FULL COUNCIL
    MEETING HELD 20 JANUARY 2010

    Item. 1 on the Agenda.....

'At the discretion of the Chairman, a presentation was given by Chris
Egelstaff on the proposals for car parking in Hedge End from 2011..'

    -----------------------------

    view full minutes here....

In these minutes, the use of the word 'proposal' is an interesting one, bearing in mind that  there never was, or has been a proposal... and as the agreement (based on the non proposal) has only been made 'in principle' then perhaps it doesn’t count either ?

The conservatives appear to be absolutely correct in there appraisal, the only thing they need to add is that Hedge End's other parks and open spaces are also at risk.

It would be interesting to know how the Town Council have, I quote, 'mishandled this process...'  only perhaps by letting it slip before an election ?

Thanks for that Pete, I quite agree that IF there were a proposal it would be widely advertised.  Having delivered STANDPOINTS here since 1983 I can reassure you every home would get information, as usual.  That's what we do with contentious issues.  But I suspect that the whole idea won't even get off the Rose Bowl's drawing board, with better solutions properly worked through.
