The Roads Policing Unit was in Upper Northam Road, Hedge End, yesterday afternoon (Wednesday 25 November) in response to complaints from residents that cars were travelling too fast in the 30 mph speed zone.

The Totton based unit was positioned next to the basketball court in Upper Northam Road, checking the speed of cars heading into Hedge End and between 4.00 and 5.00pm had stopped two cars, one travelling at 38 mph and the other at 39 mph.

Drivers caught speeding between 36 and 39 mph are given the opportunity of attending a driving awareness course– but for those doing 40 mph and above, it’s a fixed penalty fine of £60 and three points.

PC Shaw said, ‘A recent survey shows that many people class speeding as anti-social behaviour and it’s an issue of growing concern to the public.

‘We’re also here to get the message over that speeding is dangerous. The faster you’re going the more likely you are to seriously injure someone or kill them.’

This week – 23-29 November – is also Road Safety Week, organised by Brake, the road safety charity. Brake was set up to help reduce incidents on the road through educating the public and running campaigns, and also to support people bereaved or seriously injured as the result of a road crash.

If you’re concerned about road safety a look at the Hampshire County Council website and the road safety products for sale through its shop section might be worthwhile. The website states, ‘Safety is an important responsibility for anyone involved in transport and every road user has a part to play ... We have a wide range of products from cycle helmets and fluorescent clothing, educational resources and training courses, through to novelty items such as keyrings, badges and stickers. ‘

    1. I'm not sure that 4pm-5pm is the best time to check for speeding: there's too much traffic about as a rule, so not possible to do more than 30mph anyway...!

    2. The bend at the top of Upper Northam Road, near St Catherines View is the really dangerous bit: I've seen cars understeering round that in the dry, clearly still doing 60-70 having come off the Motorway.

    3. The 36mph and 40mph thresholds seem reasonable to me. Can't really argue about those: its an improvement on people being nicked for doing 31mph which was seriously OTT a few years ago...

    4. If the cops really want to do good business, try policing the roundaboutss en-route to the Rose-Bowl when there's a Test Match on: the motorists coming down from London have no lane discipline, they'll turn left from the outside lane cutting across other people and thats even more dangerous than doing 36 - 39mph along Upper Northam Road...!
