Around 40 new street name plates will be installed in the Hedge End, West End and Botley area in early spring, with priority given to some of the roads in Hedge End, including Maunsell Way, Turnpike Way and Kings Copse Avenue.

Eastleigh Borough Council is statutorily responsible for the upkeep of street name plates and to ensure they meet visibility and safety standards – with particular emphasis on emergency vehicle requirements – and this set of upgrades is part of a rolling programme of work taking place within the borough.

The new signs will have a reflective backing which will be particularly useful at night.

The Hedge End, West End and Botley Area Committee added a further £7,000 to the devolved basic budget of £8,000 for this work to be done.

Eastleigh Borough’s ‘Street Scene’ programme looks after the maintenance of highway verges and the general appearance of the image of the borough, and which includes the planting of roadside flower-beds.

The Hedge End, West End and Botley Committee has 13 councillors and is responsible for local policy and local matters involving planning applications and enforcement, traffic management, environmental issues, leisure facilities, refuse collections and recycling. The committee has its own budget which can be used as the committee sees appropriate.

For more information about the street name plate replacement programme, contact Eastleigh Borough Council on 023 8068 8437.

For details about the councillors on the Hedge End, West End and Botley Area Committee, including a list of councillor members from Hedge End wards, and for information about the committee itself see the Eastleigh Borough Council website.

Something odd about the figures qouted which seem to suggest the cost of replacing 40 old style street name plates with new ones bearing the corporate logo will be £15000, or £375 each.
Six months ago in reply to an FOI request the council stated the cost was £155 each, including production and *blush* errection.
Reacting to critiscism that the rolling replacement scheme was just a rebranding operation they stated that signs bearing the old style 2006 logo would not be replaced with ones bearing  the new 2008 (slightly larger) logo unless "they have been damaged in traffic incidents or significantly vandalised beyond repair."
Now it seems we are being told they have to go too, in order to meet  'emergency vehicle requirements'.
