Last week I was so caught up in it being Walk to School Week that it completely passed me by that 17-21 May was also Silver Surfer Week in Hampshire, with Hampshire County Council running various workshops and events to encourage and help older people to use computers and the Internet.

So if you’re a ‘Silver Surfer’ and have found Hedgeendpeople after attending one of these events, then Welcome!

And do please register and post your thoughts on the activities on offer last week.

Locally, there was one-to-one teaching at West End Library looking at Internet access, a drop-in session at West End’s Hilldene Centre, and in Hedge End at Freegrounds Junior School pupils were on-hand to demonstrate basic computer skills.

The aim of the sessions was to give Silver Surfers basic PC skills and enable them to use email, and to surf the net for news, local events and travel information as well as access social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Topics covered also included how to share family photos and shop online, and ways in which to use computers and the Internet to research family history.

Hampshire County Council website has a section for Silver Surfers’ news, and on the website you can also find pages containing useful information for computer and Internet beginners, as well as advice on Internet uses for more advanced users.
