Eastleigh Sports and Physical Activity Alliance (SPAA) is currently seeking nominations for local sporting heroes - so if you know of a team that’s excelled this year or someone in Hedge End whose work for sport should be rewarded and celebrated you have until Monday 6 December to tell the SPAA.

The aim is to recognise individual excellence, team achievement and the work of people ‘behind the scenes’ who provide and support sporting opportunities across the Borough of Eastleigh.

The awards will celebrate achievements for the 2010 sporting year apart from nominations for Service to Sport which will recognise service in coaching, officiating or volunteering over a number of years.

The 12 categories include awards for teams and individuals involved with senior and junior sports, and disability sports, and for people who are coaches, officials, or volunteers.

Sportsmen and sportswomen nominees must live in Eastleigh borough and for all other categories nominees must live, coach, officiate or volunteer in the borough.

Cabinet Lead for Leisure Councillor Alan Broadhurst says “This is a fantastic opportunity to nominate those special people who make a really significant contribution to sport throughout the borough. The awards will also be a key event in Eastleigh’s journey towards the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

The award categories are:

Junior Sportsperson

Senior Sportsperson

Junior Disability Sportsperson

Senior Disability Sportsperson

Junior Team of the Year

Senior Team of the Year

Coach of the Year

Official of the Year

Junior Volunteer of the Year

Senior Volunteer of the Year

Service to Health

Service to Sport

Awards are open to non-disabled and disabled nominees in all categories apart from the Disability Sportsperson categories.

So if you think someone in Hedge End is due recognition for a personal achievement in sport, or has inspired others with their commitment, enthusiasm and professionalism – or maybe you know or a team that’s done exceptionally well – then visit the Eastleigh Borough Council website for full details of nomination entry criteria and get voting.

The Eastleigh Sport and Physical Activity Alliance Advisory Board is made up of key local organisations who have an interest in sport and physical activity, including schools and colleges, community partnerships, and youth, health and sports organisations.
