Over 120 local walkers took part in a ‘brisk’ walk in Hedge End to mark the tenth anniversary of the Eastleigh Healthwalks scheme.

The walk began at the 2000 Centre, St John’s Road, and ended with the walkers – the Deputy Mayor of Eastleigh, Councillor Wayne Irish, among them – returning to the centre for a celebration afternoon tea.

The Healthwalks scheme is organised by Eastleigh Borough Council and was set up to combine a social activity with keeping healthy and active.

The walks are led by trained volunteers and the council run ten per week throughout the year from different places in the borough ‘come rain or shine’ – and it’s free to take part.

Hedge End’s walk takes place on a Thursday and leaves from The Drummond Centre, Drummond Road, at 9.30am. Other walks leave from venues in Chandler’s Ford, West End, Hamble, Eastleigh, Fair Oak, and Bishopstoke.

Each walk lasts about an hour and covers approximately 3 miles although some – including the Hedge End walk – have an optional slower walk in addition to the main route.

Taking a regular brisk walk is said to prevent heart disease, strokes, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes and the council says that to participate ‘All you need is a good pair of shoes, suitable clothing for the weather and enthusiasm!!’

Healthy Lifestyles Officer Marianne Cairley comments, “The Healthwalks scheme has been an amazing success over the past 10 years.

“Over that time thousands of local people have enjoyed the benefits of regular walking that includes improving your overall health and it’s also a great way to socialise and get to know your local area.”

She adds, “If you are interested in joining in just turn up to one of our walks – they are great fun and they’re all free!”
