If you’re celebrating Halloween this weekend and are planning to do creative and imaginative things with pumpkins the message from Eastleigh Borough Council is don’t just throw them away afterwards, but recycle them.

As food waste pumpkins can be recycled as part of the council’s borough-wide food waste collection scheme, and if you’re worried that a pumpkin is too big to fit into the brown bin you can leave it on top for collection.
The pumpkins will be recycled with the rest of the food waste and ultimately turned into turf.
The pumpkin recycling initiative is part of the Council’s ongoing Recycling Challenge ‘Small changes - Big difference’ that aims to encourage all residents to increase the amount that they recycle.
Cabinet Lead for the Environment Louise Bloom says, “Our residents are great recyclers and this exciting initiative will provide the opportunity for the Halloween pumpkins to be recycled rather than wasted.” She adds, “We couldn’t achieve our superb recycling rates without their help and as local people enjoy Halloween I would encourage them to make sure they recycle their pumpkins.”
For more information about recycling your pumpkins and the food waste collection scheme generally visit the Eastleigh Borough Council website.

I hope people do pumpkins this year, I know some places have competitions for carvig them and they do look wonderfully spooky with candles in them. Another idea is to eat what you cave out- many recipees out at this time of year with pumpkin in. Soup, maybe??
