As a newcomer to this area I would be very interested to hear what the locals feel I should know, and the best way to become a part of our new community.

We have 3 adult children who no longer live with us.

Looking forward to hearing what you come up with

    Welcome to Hedge End.

Hedge End is a nice place to live, but I'm not sure it has a thriving community. Certainly not in the sense that it would have done 100 years ago. I think its got something to do with the rapid expansion of the little village into a commuter-town and modern-life in general. We all drive around in cars, work outside of the town and shop in horrible superstores that don't have the personal touch of the old village store. We probably don't know half the people in our cosy little cul-de-sacs if we're honest...

We used to have two pubs in the village, but one has recently been demolished. That probably says a lot, but the Barleycorn is not a bad place to start if you want to integrate with other people in Hedge End.

Hegde End Carnival is the most significant annual event that seems to reach all corners of the town. If you want to be involved in the community, and its great that you do, I'm sure that the Hedge End Carnival Committee would appreciate some extra help. That's my suggestion for the best way of becoming part of the community. Any others, anybody, please...?

Apart from networking with other Hedge Enders on the HedgeEndPeople website, of course....!

    Thanks for the reply.
I think maybe the first year I'll just visit the Hedge end carnival and see what happens from then. When is it on?. I'll look out for it.
I do have a chronic illness to take into consideration too....
I think theres a break down of commmunity all over the country. The personal touch has gone and people don't want to mix, maybe because of fear or judgement, or just plain laziness. Many peoples community is a virtual one, one the computer or TV soaps. But a real community life is a happier one all round so its worth persuing.

This site seems to be a good start. Its wonderful to get a personal reply so quickly.

And welcome to Hedge End ’idmm7' from Hedgeendpeople! It’s great you’ve found the site so quickly – and do keep checking on it for the news and views in Hedge End!

You might also find the links bottom left on the Home page useful for finding out about Hedge End.

The Hedge End Carnival is held on the first Saturday in July so this year will be on the 3rd. See their website for more information, tinyurl.com/yzxcwm4 – and of course Hedgeendpeople will also have details nearer the time.

    Hi from Hedgeendpeople, Jooliemac!

I'll be posting details about things to do over Easter shortly and the weekend of 22-24 April is St George Fest with lots of activities in Hedge End over the three days. There will be more information on the website about this later, but in the meantime take a look at the St George Fest website, tinyurl.com/y9lkk2u

Hopefully you'll find some fun things to do in the next few weeks and it will be a start to getting out and meeting people.

Welcome to Hedge End JooileMac. You're right, people do tend to keep themselves to themselves. Dunno why, it's not something that is confined to Hedge End, it is a characteristic of the region as a whole.

Is it the different style of housing down here, lots of little "castles" rather than the Tenament blocks typical of Glasgow...?

Can you shed any light on this JoolieMac.

    Hi Jooliemac
We've just moved in and begun to start finding our way around. All the industrial estates look the same to me and I keep getting lost lol
I'm loving it here though. Close to town, close to country. We're prepared for it to take a while to settle. From past experience I don't expect to feel really at home for a couple of years really. I am finding the locals quite friendly though.....wel as firendly as Southerners are by nature....
Hedge end has a real village feel and the train is direct to both Eastleigh and Fareham which are slightly bigger little towns.
As 2 newbees here it would be great to meet up somewhere for a cuppa sometime.
I don't know how to send personal messages though either. Maybe someone here could help us out...
