Another good column from Daniel. I laughed out loud in places, not something I do with things I read very often, except, embarrassingly, on a train sometimes.
I too can't entirely make up my mind about the dress code, and yes, it might depend on the woman - and the nightdress....
I can see why he might have had two reactions to the man's appearance - and I hope I'm not doing him a disservice when I take a guess at which was the most pressing emotion...
But if the chap gave his profession as a writer, somehow that doesn't surprise me. I know many and several have zilch self-awareness. Others verge on the barking mad.
Rightly or wrongly, we judge by appearances more than we should. I think it was Oscar Wilde who said something to the effect that we should. Personally I feel that clothes say a great deal about us - whether we intend it or not.
And if it's good enough for Oscar, it's good enough for me.
