During a spate of commercial burglaries in Eastleigh, Southampton and the New Forest between 20 July and 16 September thousands of pounds worth of cigarettes were taken.
Detective Sergeant Damon Kennard said: “I understand that it can be very tempting to buy cheap cigarettes, but I would strongly urge smokers to consider where they have come from.
“It is very likely that these have been stolen.
“I would like to hear from anyone who has information about those selling cheap cigarettes or about those committing these burglaries.”
Anyone with any information is asked to call the police at Lyndhurst CID on 101 or to contact the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
