Beware cold-calling mobility scooter salesmen posing as council staff in Hedge End

Hampshire County Council Trading Standards officers are warning people in Hedge End to beware of doorstep callers selling high-priced mobility scooters, bathing and other aids and claiming to be from Social Services.

Various reports have been received by Trading Standards and in each case the Hedge End resident has been telephoned prior to a visit, with the male caller stating he’s from either Social Services or occupational therapy, and therefore implying he’s a representative of Hampshire County Council.

In the most recent incident a vulnerable lady allowed a man into her home for about an hour and was subjected to aggressive sales tactics.

Trading Standards advises that Hampshire County Council does not make calls of this nature and if you receive one to refuse a visit. In addition, council staff always carry identification which should be checked.

Trading Standards’ advice generally to consumers is to refuse to agree to work initiated by a cold-call, made either over the telephone, in person on the doorstep or via a leaflet drop, and if you are looking to get work done to obtain at least three quotes from reputable businesses or traders who belong to a recognised trade association, such as the Hampshire County Council Buy With Confidence scheme.
