Leave this Laburnum alone...!

At the local elections I thretened to write "You must be joking right!" alongside the UKIP candidates name on the ballot paper. My argument being that they make a lot of sense nationally, but are irrelevant locally...

UKIP flyer: Leave this Laburnum alone!
Well they've just proven me wrong, by being out and about delivering campaign leaflets which concentrate on the issue of the Village Laburnum that the Lib Dem Councillors want to fell, to facilitate a new play area so that a comercially run creche can expand.
UKIP report that the Lib Dems want to fell the Laburnum because its leaves/seeds are poisonous (which they are, but they'll only make you sick) so the Lib Dems are now resorting to spurious Health & Safety arguments in order to get their way...
I understand that one of the Trustees is also a Town Councillor, so the idea has gone a lot further than it ever would if you or I wanted to fell a tree in Hedge End. Its a classic example of why Lib Dem stranglehold on Hedge End and Eastleigh is unhealthy: they can get away with too much. We really must make sure that the Town Council election is contested next year...!
Surely another solution, a more intelligent solution, would be to supervise any children that are playing and educate them about the dangers of eating leaves/seeds/berries from flora and fauna...
The only valid reason for felling the Village Laburnum would be if it was diseased, liable to drop branches or fall over. In other words, if it was dangerous.
It isn't, so there's no valid reason to fell it.
Hedge End, particuarly old Hedge End, should be proud of being a green and pleasant area and should be retaining/planting trees rather than destroying them.
And we shouldn't just be retaining trees in Reservoir Lane, the posh part of Hedge End...!
So I agree with UKIP for once.
Leave this Laburnum alone...!

Keith. You said (14:29 on 18/06/11) (QUOTE):
"The tree issue came up at the Finance and Administration committee on 10th March (2011) when I had already left the Lib Dems".
Could you tell us whether this was the FIRST time the issue of felling the Laburnum had come up at a meeting of the Finance and Administration Committee where you were present.

ReportUKIP have a lot of work to do if they are going to convince the people of Hedge End of anything. If they can keep it up for the long haul then respect to them. They are starting from a low base electorally though. Their candidate in May got the lowest vote of any candidate in the contested town council wards, and they were last in two of the three borough contests.

ReportPerhaps the people of Hedge End are realising that UKIP is not just a 'one issue' party after all and that local issues are of extreme importance , I remember UKIP being greatly concerned at the placing of the playing field when it was first discussed , there were many relevant issues at the time regarding the water table and the disruption to this if the plan went ahead , a petition was presented but at the meeting councilor Keith House stated 'it wouldn't matter how many petitions you collected it wont make any difference! this comment was minuted , but it speaks volumes for the sort of arrogance of the people in charge of the public purse. As a conclusion 4 years after it was built it had to be closed for drainage problems !!

ReportSo what other local campaigns have UKIP been involved in recently and when will see them so active again. Was the Laburnum a one-off...?

Reportcorrect me if i am wrong but was it not UKIP who went to the immediate aid/action of the people concerned? the Hedge end constituents who have loved this tree and watched it grow through the generations , It was to UKIP that the message came for help to save this tree and stop the chop! So UKIP got the leaflets out to the people and let them know what was happening and that UKIP would take action on their behalf and they did ! Now come on folks lets be fair here we all know unless it had not been acted on immediately it would have been rubber-stamped into oblivion and that would have been the end , except looking at the area concerned I noted that had the tree been removed it would have created some rather lucrative parking bays.....Hmmmmm.
