Improving Local Government

Not satisfied with the state of Local Government in the Borough of Eastleigh...?

I'm certainly not, but what can be done I hear you ask...?

Please read on.

I have just created an e-petition using the Governments new system.

My e-petition has now been approved, it is online and is available for you all to sign if you would like to do so. There's no pressure. It is entirely your choice. Sign if you feel you would like to.

My petition is to Prevent Councillors from serving on several Councils.

If we can get 100,000 signatories over the next 12 months, there's a chance that this might be debated in Parliament and therefore a chance that the law might be changed so that each tier of local Government has a completely different set of Councillors looking at the policies and proposals that are put to it.

So you think that was already happening, I hear you say?

Wrong...!

If the petition is successful, it will no longer be possible for Keith House (for instance) to serve on Hamshire County Council, Eastleigh Borough Council, Hedge End Town Council and Bursledon Parish Council. He would only be allowed one role on one Council, one say, one vote and that's yer lot mate...!

If we achieve that situation one day, a change which seems a lot more democratic to me, it should reduce the likelihood of the bad/questionable ideas such as Rose Bowl car-parking on Greta Park and massive housing development on green-field sites being actively worked through the various tiers of Local Government with little or no effective debate or discussion.

A good example of why we need to make this change is reported in Councillor votes against his own motion on the Eastleigh News website.

So here's your chance Hedge Enders, to make a real difference and change things for the better, rather than just reading about the problems here on HedgeEndPeople, commenting on them and otherwise being powerless to do anything.

Yesterdays debate in the House of Commons about a referendum on Europe, was also triggered by an online e-petition. Due to the problems that particular debate has caused the Prime Minister and the Tory party, the debate obviously wouldn't have happened if 100,000 people hadn't put their signature to that e-petition. So these petitions are worthwhile...

My petition is currently stuck on 35 signatures so its still a long way short, but there's still plenty of time to think about it, sign it and make a difference.

As I write this, there's a debate happening in Parliament about full release of all the documentation relating to the Hillsborough dIsaster. This was triggered by an e-petition which attracted 140,000 signatures.

If my e-petition at http://tinyurl.com/3k6zv3u also gets past that 100,000 signature threshold, the idea of "Preventing Councillors from serving on several Councils" really could be debated in Parliament.

There's still a long way to go though. Every signature counts. Thanks for your support.
